A Wrinkle in Time 2014

This week we've watched the movie of A Wrinkle in Time. As you have seen, the producers made a number of changes from the book. Choose at least two of the following three questions to answer in your comment. Be sure to use acceptable punctuation and capitalization in your comment.

1. What character was the most changed in the movie?  Were the changes related to appearance or personality or both?  Did the change help the movie or not?

2. Name an event that was added or greatly changed for the movie. How did this change effect the story? Do you think this was a good decision or not and why?

3. At the end of the movie, it appears that Meg has defeated the Black Thing on Camazotz, at least. How do you feel about that ending? Do you think that is what the book describes? Why or why not?

  1. Meg was changed most because she didn't have glasses, (except Mrs. Who's glasses,) she had no braces on, and wasn't as stubborn or impatient. When Charles Wallace was hypnotized by IT, in the book it didn't have all of those details, Mr. Murray wasn't rescued before Charels was hypnotized, and Meg, Calvin, and Mr. Murray didn't leave Camazotz right after Charels was hypnotized.

  2. I think Calvin's appearance was changed a lot in the movie. In the book it described him differently. It said that he had red hair and freckles, but in the movie it's different. I'm not sure if it helped the movie or not.

  3. 2. An event that they added to the movie, was when Mrs. Whatsit came onto the screen of the TV and scared them. It kind of effected the story because that made Meg and Calvin a little more scared of Mrs. Whatsit. It was a good decision to add that in the movie because it added a little bit more of excitement.
    3. I enjoyed the ending and it was a good movie. At the end of the book I think that the endings are very similar. I think that the ending in the book was a little more dramatic than the movie.

  4. I thought that the IT was one of the characters that was most changed because I thought it would be a small brain sitting on a platform instead of a giant slob of gray stuff. It didn't help the movie. I thought tessering would be way different, but it did not really affect the movie. I don't think this was a good decision because I really did not get what they were doing. I really think the end kind of leaves you hanging in a way because Meg actually defeated the Black Thing. In a way I do kind of think the book best described the movie because it is interesting in the movie and in the book.

  5. I think the man with red eyes changed a lot because, in the book he appeared earlier in the book than in the movie, I was expecting a older man with really red eyes. I think it was an ok change in the movie because it kept showing red eyes watching them, but it was different. I thought it was different at the end because " It " took her to her house, a basket ball game, and back to earth but only a bunch of Megs. I thought the ending was good but not the same, because she defeated the dark thing but had a hard time at first doing it. I don't hunk it is what the book describes because, it started coming out of the floor, and tricked her a lot. I thought the movie was good though.

  6. I think Charles Wallace was mostly changed. He was six in the movie and five in the book. He didn't seem to talk as much in the movie. They added the event of when Meg went into the home? When it was like nothing had happened but she realized there was a lie there. When she also went in Calvin's basketball game and her classroom.

  7. 1. I think Charles Wallace was the change was problaly apparence because he was six in movie and he was five in the book.
    2. There was barely an IT it was just in the ground and IT didn't control the red eyed man did and that was a big change I think it wasn't a good decision because IT doesn't control anything and that is a plot of the story.
    3. I didn't like the ending because Meg didn't really defeat the black thing because she didn't defeat IT and IT didn't really do that much the red eyed man did a lot of the things IT did I think that the book says that Meg defeated IT instead of Meg defeating the red eyed man.

  8. I think that the person who was the most changed was Mrs. Which, because in the book she would talk strange but in the movie she talked completely normal.
It would've been harder to make her talk like that, so I see why they didn't make her talk weird. It probably would have been cooler, but it was still an awesome movie!

    1. One event that I think should've still been there was in the book when they found there father Charles Wallace already had red eyes but in the movie they found their father then the man with the red eyes hypnotized Charles Wallace.

  9. I think that Calvin changed because in the book it said that he had freckles and red hair. I think that when Calvin was changed it made the movie worse.I also think that when Meg went to save Charles Wallace that it made the movie worse because IT appeared near the end. I think that scene is worse than it was in the book and that it did not make the movie better.

  10. 1. I think that Calvin looked different because the book said red hair and freckles and he had bleach hair. Meg did not have glasses or braces and Charles Wallace looked more like 8 than 6.I think that it did not help the movie but it did not effect it either.

They added a lot of events in the movie such as Mrs. Whatsit in the T.V and talking to the kids outside ect. For me it was. For me it was cool because I got to look at it in a new perspective.

I enjoyed the ending and the ending was a lot like the book said.

  11. 1. IT was changed the most because it was to big among other things. It didn't help the movie because the movie was almost completely different than the book.
    2. Camazotz was almost completely changed because there was no theater among many more things. It changed it by making it make even less sense than the movie already did. It wasn't a good decision because it made the movie weirder and made it almost nothing like the book.
    3. I did not like that ending because the book specifically said that Camazotz wasn't free yet. I feel that if I was a critic I would give it .5 out of 5, or 1 out of 10.

  12. I think Calvin was the most changed character because the book said he had red hair and freckles. I think the change didn't effect the movie in any way. I also think that the part when the strange creatures came when Meg was frozen was changed. The book said they had tentacles coming off their arms and maybe out of their head. I don't think that effects the story either because it's just how the characters look. I liked the ending because it was very interesting. The book is sort of like the movie is described.

  13. IT was the most changed character, appearance IT looked like big worms, it did help the movie cause it looked really cool. The movie was changed when the floor separated, it affects it cause then IT showed Charles Wallace the book that he had, and that wasn't in the book, no cause it might get people confused. The ending was really good cause most people like a happy ending, no, the book does not say that it just says that they just leave Camazotz without defeating The Black thing and every thing was back to normal.

  14. The charter most changed was Ms.Which in the book it said Ms.Witch looked like a witch in the movie she was wearing gold clothes.
The event added was when Ms.Whatsit appeared in the tv, I don't think that that was a good change because it does not relate to the book.

  15. 1. I think IT changed most. IT was very very big, gray, and weird. To me IT looked like a giant earth worm. This changed how he looked a lot. I think this helped the movie. I was not looking forward to seeing a brain.
    2. I liked how they changed the ending. In the book she only saved Charles Wallace and in the movie she saved them all. That made it a lot better. The book made it clear that she only saves Charles Wallace.

  16. IT was the character that was changed the most. It looked like a giant earthworm It helped the movie because it looked real. the event added was when Ms. Whatsit appeared in the tv.I don't think that was a good change because it's just really weird.

  17. 1. I think Calvin was changed because in the book it said he was a red-head and in the movie he was brown haired.

2.I think an event that was important was at the end where Meg thought they were home when it was just a thought. It was important because it made the audience think that they were home.

  18. I think meg was changed the most because she didn't have glasses. I think this helped the movie because no one would realy want to see a movie with ugly people in it.

  19. #2 when they were in camozots it was a little different and in the book they went through a little more trouble than in the movie. #3 I thought it was just like the book when they ended up in the twins garden and the whiches appeared it felt just like the book.

  20. IT looked different. In he book it said that IT was brain it looked like a octopus squished up.
I think she didn't defeat the black thing the ladies said she helped and she did her part.

  21. 1. I think Mrs. Whatsit changed in the movie because she was black and more funny than serious.
    2. The difference is that the happy medium is at Uriel instead of that creepy planet. I would have liked it more on the other planet.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Charles Wallace because he knew the way to everywhere almost. I thought that whenever Meg thought that her Charles Wallace and Calvin were at mega house but she was controlled by Charles Wallace.

  23. 1. I think Mrs. Whatsit changed in the movie because she was black and more funny than serious.
    2. The difference is that the happy medium is at Uriel instead of that creepy planet. I would have liked it more on the other planet because they get to explore more.

  24. I think they should have made Charles Wallace hypnotized before they found their father like it was in the book.

  25. 1. I think Meg changed the most, because she learned that it doesn't matter what is on the outside, it only matters what is on the inside that matters. 2. IT changed in the movie because it wasn't a brain it was a grayish worm thing that controlled people under the ground of CENTRAL central intelligence.

  26. I think that the most changed character is IT. The most changed scene is, when they went to the haunted house for the first time.

  27. 1. Meg and Father don't have glasses. Mrs.Which was not quivering.
    2. They never see IT./ When they land on Isthmus it says in the book they land
in a grassy field./They don't have the turkey dinner on Camozatz in the movie. They meat father before the man with the red eyes.
    3. I think at the end it needs more.

    ReplyDelete
  28. It changed the most because it looked like a computerized kind of machine that I thought that it would look like a real human brain

They showed Charles Wallace being hypnotized by the man with red eyes and not it.

    1. 1. I think Calvin looked different cause in the book it said he had red hair.
      2. I think and event that was different was when they saw IT cause they were in a diner and that was really different then in the book.

  29. what the book had said. It was much different in the movie than in the book. It kind of helped the movie but at first I did not understand who it was at first.

2.The man with the red eyes was different in the movie than in the book. With the man with the red eyes was different because it was not what it said in the book.

  31. 1. I think that the man with the red eyes was changed the most. I think why because he wasn't very connected with it.

    2. When Mr. Murry tessered in the book when Meg landed SMS didn't get up for about 15 minutes. But in the movie Meg got up faster than the book.

  32. 1. It was much different in the movie than in the book. It was like a pool of worms. It was very different because in the book it was a brain but in movie it was a pool of worms.

    2. When they get to the place with aunt beast in the book they land on grass but in the movie they land on a frozen snowy ground. It changed the place of seeing aunt beast. It was a good decision to change the movie because it made more sense.

  33. The aliens did not look like giant squids they looked like bears. It helped the movie because they were still nice.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Meg looks different because she had glasses in the book it help the movie because Miss. Who gave her glasses.

Miss. Which talked like she stuttered in the book. In the movie she talked perfect.

  35. The Happy Medium appears in the book to have much wisdom, whereas it has no definite gender in the film (although Mrs. Whatsit addresses it as her) and is portrayed as nearly a complete imbecile. Also the turkey dinner on Camazotz I believe was replaced with the red-eyed man bringing and encyclopedia to life.

  36. 1. Meg. They changed her appearance and that made it very confusing for me.

    2. When the floor split apart the added telekinesis. They also gave Meg's dad a broken leg.

    ReplyDelete
  37. 1.I think IT changed the most. In the book, IT was never a GIANT brain, just a brain that was bigger than normal to be detouring. In the movie, IT was a huge, gray, brain, and is mostly represented through the man with red eyes.

    3. I don't like the ending of the movie. I personally don't think it is what the book describes, because in the book, Meg has only saved Charles Wallace, not the whole plant of Camazotz, much less defeated The Black Thing! I think the movie is a horrible replica of the book, and is almost ad bad as The Hobbit, Decollation of Smaug. Of course, this is only my opinion, and not the facts.

  38. I think IT changed the most in appearance because I was thinking of a brain on some type of stand. I thought it was a pink three foot by four foot somewhere close to that range in size. The change did not help the movie it only made it grosser.
The advent that was added was when IT and Charles Wallace went to Meg's school and her house. I'm pretty sure that didn't happen. I thought it was a good change because it was very intense.

    ReplyDelete
  39. 1. I think that Meg changed the most, I thought that in the book she was kinda meaner than the movie. And she wore glasses in the book.
    2. I thought that when she was with Aunt Beast that was the part that changed the most. In the movie Meg didn't seam as scared to Aunt Beast when she woke up.

    ReplyDelete
  40. In the movie we saw the drank thing going away from Camozotz . We should have seen if the man with red eyes died or if he still lives with IT. I wonder if the black thing will come back to that planet.

    ReplyDelete
  41. 1. Aunt Beast, her appearance was different and it didn't really help the movie at all or make it worse.

    2. When "Charles Wallace is playing a game" well it wasn't in the book and it came at a really weird time in the movie. No because it wasn't like the book and it was different well I just didn't like it very much.

    ReplyDelete
  42. For number 2, Charles Wallace played a trick on Meg. She saw her Mom, Sandy, and Dennys at her house but they were not acting like thereselves. They were blaming everything on her and found out that it was Charles Wallace doing it and I liked that it gives more detail to the movie.

For number 3, I really don't think that is what they described in the book but I think it was a good touch to the end.

    ReplyDelete
  43. 1. Meg changed because she did not wear glasses but in the book she does. The appearance is both and it the changed helped a little.

    2. The Happy Median changed because he was even more funny in the movie than the book. The change is very good.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Meg changed the most she did not have her glasses and she seemed younger in the movie. Yes I did think it was a good desition.

Meg's little brother did not go to ITS side until the dad was thier. It made the movie quicker.yes it made that part not run on to long.

    ReplyDelete
  45. 1.The most changed character in the movie was Aunt Beast. In the book, it said that they had tentacles, but I couldn't see any tentacles. This change had not much impact on the movie.

2.An added event was when the Man with Red Eyes had made Charles Wallace to the voice of IT. This event changed the movie because the book never said that Charles Wallace got telekinesis. I think this was a good decision because it made me think that all hope was lost when they were trying to escape.

    ReplyDelete
  46. 1. When they were on the way to the brain (or IT) the book said the wall sucked them in but in the movie they just opened a door.

    2. IT was on a stand but in the movie it came from underground

    ReplyDelete
  47. What was different about the book from the movie:

    1. Meg did not have glasses, and she did not have stubbornness.
I think it did not help the story, because that was one of the important parts of the book.

    2. Ms. Whatsit came to the house she did not ask for someone to pull off her boot hen they were checking out the haunted house Ms.Who was not sewing. Also when Ms. Whatsit turned into the thing she did not make a call she told the children to pick the flowers. Also they landed on a island to look at the dark thing. And the mane bad thing was the man with red eyes not "IT" . There was only one gift. Ms. Witch did not have a hat.

    3. I think it was pretty close to the book.
