Among the Hidden

Now that we've finished the book, I'm interested in your reaction to it.  It is a page-turner for most of us. What makes the story so interesting?  What devices does the author use to keep the reader involved?  Give examples in your comment.

Also, do you think this could ever happen here?  Is the story realistic or fantasy?

Your answer should be at least two short paragraphs.  This assignment is due Monday, November 12th.

  1. Your right Mrs. Burris I honestly think it was a big page turner, but if was in the future like in the newspaper or a magazine you see peoples prediction of the future that would make sence because my cousin has 4 kids and the government has not bothered them. But if this was in the past like African americans were slaves, but maybe it was a little after 1700 they had that law some place.

    1. It was a really good book I think that it will not happen but it could happen I really wouldn't want to happen because I want my kids to have good friends.

So I do think this will ever happen and I hope it won't happen the book was amazing I would love to read it.

  2. I think it was interesting because of the population police.I also think the author wanted to end each chapter with something exciting.I don't think it would happen here because the jobs people have get people enough to pay for their family.

  3. I agree with Mrs. Burris. This book is definitely a page turner. I think what keeps most of us so involved is that she makes it so realistic. I feel like Lee Grant (Luke) is a real person doing real stuff. Especially since this setting is in Washington D.C., a real place in our country that we are all familiar with.

Yes, I do think this could happen in this day of time. But I think people everywhere would be outraged. I think that people would put a stop to it immediately. As for the last question I think that this book is realistic fiction. I think that it is possible but probably not.

  4. The book was defiantly a page turner for me! The situation I think makes the story so interesting! In the United States we do not have this problem but to think what if we did? What would we do? I am the third child in my family so I would have to hide for the rest of my life!

I think this story could be realistic. In China you can only have one child per couple because of the population. I think that if the food in the United States became a situation that we could possible have this problem in the future.

I really enjoyed this book! It is a wonderful series!

  5. i think a few page-turners were when he first snuk out of the house to go to jens house, and when he realized that jen had died. i knew i was pretty sad, and surprized when jen died. most books end in a happy ending and everything goes well at the end, but, in this book, no one expectd her too die.

this could happen here if the population got too big and they set a population law. its very likely because America is probably now the most free country so people might move here. and i think that this book is realistic fiction type.

  6. I really loved this book! It was full of laughter and adventure! Its so interesting because you can only have two children. I don't think that is right. When i read the last sentence of every chapter, I just want to go on! When Jen says 'I'm your ticket out.' that just made me want to keep on reading!

I think this will never happen here in the real world because, the presidents, and government, will take good care of our community. So I think it's a Fantasy story.

  7. I liked Among the Hidden. It was exciting, fun, and at the end a little sad. The part that I think was the most interesting was when Luke found out that there was another child in the Sports Family's house. One of the tools I think is really important is a cliff-hanger. They are important because they keep the reader thinking and reading.

I don't think this law would pass here in the U.S.I think this book is realistic because it could really happen.

  8. This was a page turner. It was so exciting!Even the setting so awesome! And I feel that it was a fun and scary book! I mean scary in a good way!

I think it is realistic. In China you can only have one child so I think it could really happen...I wonder if you had one child and then had twins. They might could share a life! It was really good...I think you should read the whole series!

  9. I think for my the book was a page turner! It was so intrasting to see what was goin to happen next. I am glad that in the United States we don have that problem. My brother is the third child. He would have to hide the rest of his life.

I think the story is realistic! In China they have the same problem, but they can only have 1 kid. I really like this book. I think Im going be reading the other books! haha

  10. I think among the hidden was a great book! It was the kind of book that sucks you in and doesn't let you come out until your completely done with it. It had so many exiting and dramatic parts to it. For example when Jen and all the shadow children got shot down! Personally I think it was a great book that on a scale of one too ten I give it a 10.

  11. This book is a page turner because there were so many surprises, like when Jen died. I was very sad because she was so joyful and fun! I think it is possible to actually happen but it would be very unlikely. I don't like the law because I would really want my children to have a normal life!

  12. I loved "Among the Hidden". It was definetely a page turner and i think part of it was that she kept the story changing, so you never knew what was going to happen next. All the characters had interesting personalities, so while people were alike in some ways, they were also very different in others.

I was so enthralled with the book that i accidentally kept reading ahed. This especially happened when the Population Police came. I thought that Luke would've been gone by the time they came. Another shocking moment was when Jen cut herself for Luke. I thought that they would've just cleaned it up. The author was very detailed but also vague, as to add suspense to the story. In all "Among the Hidden" was a very good book.

  13. I enjoyed reading Among the Hidden because every chapter made me want to read more of the book. The author kept me guessing like at the end of Chapter twenty-six, I wanted to know who had the gun, so it made me keep on reading. The author always left me hanging and wanting to know more about the story!

I think Among the Hidden was fantasy. I don't think this could happen in the United States because we live in a free country! I can't wait to read the next book by Margaret Peterson Haddix!

  14. I thought it was a interesting book! It was full of surprises that made you say "Wow I NEVER saw that coming like when Jen dies and when Luke has to leave his family! It has a series that has sequel that goes in order to keep you reading. The Auther did a great jod of drawing the reader in the book. She gave each chapter an interesting start and end! By making a series of books she'll have to give the book an unfinished ending and thats exactly what she did.

I think this could happen.Let's say we got a bad president who desided to make that choice, and he or she made that choice you wouldn't even be reading this.(I would be dearly missed.)You know it's like this in China and Korea is like this and so it is very possible that it could happen to us, and a lot of Lipscomb students would be gone.( I would be missed the most(;heehee)So I do think it could happen.

    Annabelle P. out PEACE! (:

  15. I thought Among The Hidden was a very interesting book. The reason why the author made it so interesting is because she wanted people to read her books. It was deffiently a page-turner because every time you read a page you would want to read another and another. Also, sometimes you would be like 'wo I never saw that coming like when Jen got shot and killed by the population police an they wiped all the blood off before the tourists came.

I think this is realistic because it could actually happen if the population here went up too much.I really enjoyed the book.

  16. This book is a real page turner for me. this is one of those books that i can say to myself i loved that book and i want to read the next one. the author had some very good parts int he book like when luke met jen but there were some sad parts to like when jen dies.

i think it could happen because now obama is president and yeah its my oppinion too.i think our country could probibely go into a famine.but, i wouldn't like my children in the future to be killed by the government.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I really think it is a real page turner. It just stop, I'm going to read the rest of the books. There were happy parts and sad parts. It was really sad when Luke has to leave his family and never see them again. That would be very tough for him and his family.

  18. This book was definetly a page turner for me! I love when a book has twists and turns to it. Today i checked out the Among the Imposters and I cant stop reading it! I liked it when Luke found out Jen was a third child too, but it was the saddest part for me when Jens father told Luke that she was shot.

I think maybe we could go on a famine but i really hope we dont! i really hate to think about the U.S. having a population law. when i have children i want them to have enough friends and for none of them to have to hide!

    ReplyDelete
  19. It was a page turner for me. Luke was a disappointment in the end to me. If I were him I would've told my sooner about Jen.

I think the U.S. won't go into a famine. Even if we do they wouldn't pass the population law. Every person deserves to be treated equally.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I like Among The Hidden it was a real page turner for me for sure. I don't think in the future we will have a famine or anything or like if the population was to high but I'm not to worried about that. If we did have that law I would still hide no matter what.

I think the population police and law are dumb if we had that I would not like it one bit. I most think story is like a big game f hide'n' seek. I would most compare me to Luke because he is a third child. I think people should read the book!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I liked it it was grate Luke was brave to me.For putting it all on the line to see someone like him.And I loved the book.

I think the government was not thinking. They had plenty of food to go around.

  22. I agree with you Mrs.burris this is so a page turner. i think what makes this story intersting is that it always wants you to read the next chapter it also surprises you at some points like when jen dies i think maybre this could happen in the future but of course it is up to the government i am so reading the rest of the series

  23. This book is a real page turner! The auther made it so when you read it you are just dying to see what happens next. It is interesting when Luke has to go back and forthto Jen's house. It was sad that Jen died at the rally when somebody shot her and when Luke left his parents. The book was awesome!!!!!

I do not think now that a famine would happen here but maybe in the future. You do not know if the story is realistic or fantasy because it could happen in the future and there could be kids named Luke and Jen.

    ReplyDelete
  24. The book was like a Hardy Boys book, a page turner! Though it was only the first book of the series, it gave away enough information. The emotions and events were seen as present day activity. Luke meets Jen, Jen talks about the rally, Luke doesn't go, Jen dies, and Luke leaves his family.

The book was sort of realistic. What didn't make sence was how Luke could easily get to Jen's house when cars and people could pass by and see him. Although, the book was mind blowing!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think the reason the story is so interesting is because Luke is somehow always in danger but, he always takes risks to be a little bit more free each time that he leaves his house.

I think it could at some point could happen in our country but, probably only if people got selfish of the food and our resourse's.

    ReplyDelete
  26. This book was a page turner. It was very interesting. I loved how the author made it feel like it was happening in real life. In the United States this could really happen.

I think this could be realistic. It could really happen in the United States. We could run out of food but, I would hope not.

    I really enjoyed the book!

  27. I thank the book was very very good. But in the end when Jen died ,but I don't know how they could kill all the kids.that is what i thank of the book

  28. I think the author made a lot detail and she made it really intense thats why why I think its a page turner. And It could very easyly happen here but I dont think it ever will becuase we dont need it and i hope it never happens.

  29. the book was gut wrenching in some parts like at jens house at the end when the police came I personally love this book the author was magnificent she made this book where you have feeling for the main person brovo Mrs.Haddox

  30. I thought that Among the Hidden was an amazing book! I admit it was a page turner. What I couldn't believe is that at the end that Jen died! It was so hard for me to believe that.

I don't think this could happen.it couldn't happen because i don't think the government would do that to us.I also think that God would not let that happen.I am reading the rest of these books.I thought it was amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Even though I have read the book multiple times I always get excited and feel the emotions the character feels. I think what is so good about it is always giving a different outcome than expected.

I don't think this could ever happen because there is more than enough food and the goverment wouldn't do that if they had any sence. I also think that that the story is fantasy because i don't think that would really even come close to those standerds in the real world.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think that it was a very good book. But what I also liked about it was that there were 2 third children in the book. The other thing I liked about the book was the families was the reputation of the families. But the things that had happen was aweful.

I think the rally was bad but thins happen. That was what happend in this story. The law is aweful to think of only having 2 children. I would rather have more than two.

What I think was interesting was the way Jen got killed.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think its a true story. Because the video about Chinese people to have 1 child every family or couple. That the same thing as Among The Hidden but 2 children every family or couple.

The author use good words in the book like flippantly or propelled. Those words make the story so interesting. I like this book because of all the stuff that happens

    ReplyDelete
  34. Some thing that the story so interesting is all the action. It's good to have a bunch of action because then the reader doesn't get bored with the book. A good device that the author used was the describing. I love a good book that has great detail on what things are like.

I don't think the population law could happen in the United States because us Americans don't really have a problem with having to much children. I think this story was fantasy. I thought it was a great book.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I liked the book Among The Hidden. The most interesting part about the boook was when Jen's dad told Luke that Jen was dead with 40 other kids.

This story can be realtic the population law can really happen.Maybe the Goverment can really change the law to haveing only 2 chridren. Still I really like the book.

    ReplyDelete
  36. In Among the Hidden the government only allowed two children in each family because of scarcity of food. The story was interesting because there were so many children hiding from the government.

A device the author used is writing the last sentence of a chapter that makes me get all tense. It made me want to keep reading. For example, the last sentence of a chapter is when Luke found out Jen's dad worked for the population police.

This story could be realistic because there is a population law in China.

    ReplyDelete
  37. What makes this book so interesting is that it has alot of action.I love books that are like that so I won't get bored. The author did a good job at describing the the setting and characters too!

I think that it is realistic because this stuff is already going on in China.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think this storie is real. I think the Population Law is wrong. I understand about the law in China, but if the poor people have a second child, I think they should not have to pay a bill.
The author put in some very interesting details. He keeps people involved by clif anging people on the good parts. He also uses big, good words. I think this storie is realistic.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think this book is definitely my favorite. It contains a lot of serious things going on. The author put many important details so the readers can focus.
This story is very realistic because it's already happening in China. Also, the author put some fake facts that the readers may think it's a real fact.

I think that Among The Hidden was most certainly a page turner for me. What I think of as most interesting, was knowing that something like this just doesn't happen in the United States. I think that Ms. Haddix used many cliffhangers to entertain the readers. I think that it is both fantasy and realistic. It is realistic in many ways such as the Population Law, because the same thing is happening in China as this comment is being written. It is fantasy in some ways like the rally, because something like that could never have happened. Something like that would have taken an extremely long amount of time to plan and create.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I do think it was a page turner because I didn't expect any of what hapened. I think it is realistic because it is happening in China. I don't think it could happen here because the goverment wouldn't kill children.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I think Among the Hidden was interesting because Luke was a third child, and if the population police would ever find him, they would have killed him. He took a lot of risks by going to Jen's house. He was very sneaky and only got caught once by Jen's dad. The sad part was when Luke said he wanted a fake i.d. and then told his parents and this meant he had to leave them.

    ReplyDelete
  43. The Among The Hidden was a real page tuner for me. I really thought it was interesting how Luke was always taken the chance that he could have gotten killed. I can't blame him because if that was me I would have done the same. This book could easily be realistic but I don't think it would happen in Washington D.C. I really don't like reading unless its got action or adventure then I find it interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think this book was well written and kept me interested. It was very interesting because I wanted to know what would happen next.
I think this could happen in real life in other countries besides China, but not in America. It wouldn't happen because the people wouldn't allow it.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think it is weird that they have a law like that. He finely found some kids his same kind. But it is very sad when Jen dies. I don't think this can happen in real life because I think it is a made up fantasy tale.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I don't think this book was a page turner for me. Although I know a lot of people will disagree with me, I do think this law is possible. The law was caused by a famine that nearly starved the planet. A famine like this is possible so it is possible that a country may go to drastic measures to keep its people fed.

The way author made it interesting was by adding suspense and denial. For example, when Jen died, you didn't want to believe it.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I loved Among the Hidden it was a great book that I think people should read. She puts a lot of detail into her books, and she uses great vocabulary in her book for example instead of sad she would put upset or depressed. Do I think the Population Law is going to happen? No, 9 chances out of ten it isn't, but the way thing are going on now , it could happen. I love the series and I can't wait to read Among the Imposters.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think the author made it interesting because, she used lots of description and tried to make it where it wasn't where it could absoulutly never happen. Another reason is that she picked a good topic. I for one thought is was a realy good book to read about.

I actually do think it could happen. I mean it's not a totally distant idea because China has a kind-of similar situation but they can only have one kid. the China kids are like Luke and Jen because the blackchildren are pushed into the shadows as well.

  49. I really enjoyed the book! I really thought the book was a page turner. Like on the last page of chapter twenty eight when it said "open up, Population Police!", I got really excited and I flipped the page and it was chapter twenty nine, and Mrs.Burris told us to stop there, I got so mad! I thought the most saddest part was when Jen's dad told Luke that Jen got shot. I really thought I was going to cry!
I think that maybe the population law could take place in America. Like we could have famines and we could run out of food I guess. But I really hope we never have the Population law. It gives me the chills just typing about it. I think the law is really cruel. I encourage everyone to read the series, and I know I can't wait till I read the next book!

  50. I thought the auother did a good job of exspresing the feelings of each character. She also tried to make it sound like it could never happen. It was intresting to me because I liked wondering about what will happen next. Overall I really enjoyed this book and would encourage people to read it!
I think the population law could happen. But more like China's sittuation. Where it would not be as strict. The kids in China do relate to Jen and Luke. Even though some parts of the book were sad, I still enjoyed the book. I really want to read the rest of the series as well.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I personally like it because I can picture it in my mind of this story happening. I don't really think this would happen because United States is a free country.

The story is pretty fantasy but in China, with the one-child policy it may seem realistic. The book was good and I almost cried. I learned quite a bit of vocabulary in this book, such as the words hydroponics and bugged. I'm not sure if I am going to read the rest of rest of the series.

  52. i think it was really good it was a very sad aat some parts but it was good i think i could happen in real life because it is happening in china now it is sad D:what is happening there

  53. I think the "Among The Hidden" was a very good book. I also think that the auther makes it so interesting by adding alittle bit of adventure and a little bit of mystery in it. I think that made the book very interesting.

When I said mystery I ment like when he thinks there is someone in the house behind his house. Also the adventure part is like when he ventures in to Jen's house and finds out that there is someone. That just made the book way better.

I think this story is fantasy because I don't think people would actually do that to parents or kids.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I think the book is realistic but I dont think that kind of thing would happen in America . The book cept changing it was verry unpredictable . The auther did a good job in showing the charecters amotion .
The auther cept you intrested by each chapter felt like a new mystery. The book cept takeing unexpected turns , witch dose a good job in ceeping the reader intrested. I really liked the book Amung the Hidden , and i would defenitly recoment it to people who have not read it.

  55. I loved the book, sometimes I lost track of what pg. I was on. I also liked how The chapter would end right when a good part was going to happen. It was almost like the book just hooked you in. Im glad we read this book and I hope we read one like it again

My favorit part is when Luke goes to Jen's house.

  57. Yes, I think this story is a HUGE page turner. There were so many surprises! This book might be one of the most best books I have ever read. One of my favorite parts was when Luke sprinted over to Jen's house to meet her.
I loved this book. I want to read more books in the series. The book was very interesting and fun to read.

  58. I Thought that the book was very interesting and it was definitely a page turner. I would like to read Among the Imposters, the second book in the series. I thought the book was a little sad, considering that Jen dies. I am curious to know what will happen to Luke and what he will do to stop the population law.

I don`t think that the population law would need to be established in The United States specifically, but maybe in Japan or China. I think that the story is realistic but, I don`t think this will happen anytime soon to any countries. I thought the author used a cliff hanger well in the end when Luke rode off to the boarding school after getting a fake I.D. card. I think that is a cliff hanger because I don`t know what is going to happen to Luke at the boarding school.
